LiteracyToday we are going to be talking about firefighters. You can follow along as Pete the Cat takes you to visit a firehouse.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LXF_VFm1XQ
Firefighters are very important community helpers. Using the information you heard in the story and what you already know about firefighters, try to answer these questions.Have an adult or older brother or sister help you spell the words.1. Can you list 2 things that firefighters DO? You could say they help people.2. Can you list 3 things that firefighters USE while they are putting out a fire? You could say they use an axe.3. Can you list 4 things that firefighters WEAR when they are doing their job. You could say they wear/carry an oxygen tank. Here’s a little poem you can read with your family. You can practice your “sh” blend.Fire! Fire!Fire! Fire! Fire! Fire!Hear the siren blowing.Fire! Fire! Fire! Fire!Firefighters are goingTo climb the ladderAnd squirt the hose. With a woosh, woosh, woosh,Out the fire goes!
MathLook around your house and gather a small collection of counters (10-20). You could use cheerios, pasta, lego blocks or anything else you can find. Choose a number from 2-10 for JK students and from 2-20 for SK students. Count out that many items from your collection and keep it separate from the rest. Now with these counters, see if you can divide/separate them into 2 equal groups (each group has exactly the same amount). Repeat this over and over again using a different number of counters. SK students can record which numbers/quantities can be divided equally and which cannot.Try to explain why some numbers can be divided into two equal groups while others cannot. If you wanted to extend your work, you could try dividing your counters into 3 or 4 equal groups as well. Both JK and SK students can feel free to choose larger number outside of the 2-20 range (if you have enough counters).
