Literacy

This is the time of year when many people are planting gardens. Many start with putting seeds in the ground and then with sun and rain, a plant eventually grows. With an adult, read the two poems below. After you have read them, you are going to look at the beginning or the end of the word and find:

  1. consonant blends such as pl, th, sh, sp, gr, sl, fl

  2. sight words (commonly or frequently used words) such as I, a the, in, is, it, will

, if you are a JK, choose 3 of the blends and try to come up with 3 words that start with that blend and practise printing them. Have an adult help you sound them out.

If you are a SK, choose 3 sight words and see if you can use all 3 in a sentence about seeds, plants, or gardening.

Math

Read the ladybug poem below.

Ladybug, ladybug on the tree

Fly down here and sit with me

Rest on my hand, I’ll count your spots

2, 4, 6, 8 polka-dots!

Using a ruler (as a number line) or a 100 chart, see if you can continue counting by 2s all the way to 30 or even 50 (and beyond). All of these numbers are called EVEN numbers.

Now try to count by 2s starting at 1 instead of 2. For example: 1, 3, 5, 7 polka dots! Next see if you can continue counting by 2s all the way to 30 or even 50 (and beyond). All of these numbers are called ODD numbers. Have fun!
