Literacy:

Can you guess what community helper we are describing based on these clues?

Clue #1: This community helper wears a hard hat

Clue #2: This community helper sometimes drives very big trucks

Clue #3: This community helper can be seen working in a construction zone

Did you guess... a construction worker?! If so, you are right! Construction workers work very hard operating heavy equipment and working on construction sites where bridges, houses, and other structures are built. Construction workers are community heroes!

Below is a list of words associated with a construction worker:

- Tool belt

- Hard hat

- Boots

- Vest

- Truck

- Bulldozer

- Crane

- Drill

- Hammer

- Nails

- Saw

Your task is to choose 3-4 of these words to construct using newspapers, magazines, and flyers. You are going to find the letters and cut them out. Then, glue them on a separate sheet of paper. We look forward to seeing the construction worker words you put together. :)

Extension Activity: Watch this video all about construction workers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7azUjcUlzg . What can you build at home using your toys or recycled materials? Take a picture of your construction project and show your teachers!

Math:

Keep your scissors and glue sticks out because you are going to make a shape pizza! The first thing you’ll do is take a paper plate or cut out a large circle from white or beige paper. Collect green, pink, yellow/beige, and red construction paper. If you only have white paper then colour a half page of the above colours. Then make a list of the following shapes: square, rectangle, circle, and triangle. SKs can do their best to sound out these words and write them. JKs can trace the words or they can try their best to write the words by sounding them out also. Next, cut the pink paper out into squares for the ham. Cut the yellow/beige paper into rectangles for the cheese. Cut the green pieces into triangles for the green peppers. Lastly, cut the red paper into circles to make the pepperonis. Glue all of the shapes on to your beautiful pizza and then count and record how many of each shape you put on your pizza. Then… eat it!... just kidding… but pizza sure sounds good! ;)

Ellyauna's masterpiece. We didn't have newspaper so we did it a little different!
