It's time to get creative!

Literacy

In kindergarten, we love stories! We know they include characters (who is in the story) that can be people, animals or things. Your task today is to make up a story with a shadow shape puppet.

First you need to make the shadow puppet (example in picture):

  1. Grab an empty paper towel or toilet paper roll.

  2. Wrap it in cling wrap (saran wrap), you can use a rubber band or tape to hold it in place.

  3. Draw a character on a piece of paper and cut it out or use a sticker. Stick it on the cling wrap in the middle of the circular end of the toilet paper roll (use tape or glue).

  4. Hold a flashlight in the roll and aim it into a dark space (like a cupboard or closet).

  5. You will see the shadow on the wall.

Once your shadow puppet(s) is made, your task is to make up a story with the puppet. You can orally tell a family member this story or line up your stuffed animals/toys and tell them. Then try these writing activities to go with it:

JK - Write the name of your character on a piece of paper. Parents, you can write your child's idea in marker or highlighter and have them trace over it or write it and have them copy it.

SK - Write a simple sentence about your character. Example: Mickey is dancing.

Math

Do you know what a pattern is? Can you find a pattern in your house? Can you think of something in the real world that has patterns? We can! We are thinking of a plaid shirt or the black and white stripes on a zebra! Take a look at the video to give you some help on patterns: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9wt4K5Zup0

Your task today is to make different types of patterns (see picture). See if you can make 5 different patterns using different attributes like colour, shape and size. There are different ways that you can do, choose which is easiest for you at home:

  • Drawing

  • Use stickers

  • Use toys like LEGO pieces

  • Use food such as pasta noodles or Fruit Loops

  • Use craft supplies like pom poms

Hayden enjoyed telling her own story with shadow puppets and making patterns with toys and finding patterns in our home 😊
